The Summer Heat and Your Diabetic Feet

Summer Heat and Your Diabetic Feet

As a diabetic, your health is at the forefront of your mind all year long. However, during the hot summer months, it is even more important to keep your condition in check because during this time of the year, you are even more likely to develop a host of foot problems.

While heat and humidity are OK in small doses, prolonged exposure to the summer elements could result in nerve damage or infection. Severe nerve damage can prevent you from feeling a bump, sore, cut or burn on your lower extremities, which may lead to an infection if it goes unnoticed and untreated. Infections that are not address timely, could become serious and result in gangrene and amputation.

Daily care of your diabetic feet is imperative to prevent life-threatening issues. While you need to inspect your feet every day of the year, you should be extra vigilant during the summer months. Here are some other tips to keep your feet happy and healthy.

Don’t Skip the SPF

While sunscreen is important all year long, you may need to increase the frequency you apply it during the summer months. The skin on the top and bottom of your feet is very sensitive and can burn quickly. If you’re planning on being out in the sun, apply sunscreen to the tops and bottom of your feet regularly.

Barefoot is Not Best

Going even just a few minutes without shoes can cause damage to your feet. Not only can you burn the bottoms of your feet on hot sand, sidewalks and pavement, you are also more likely to receive cuts, wounds and blisters when you go shoeless. Additionally, by going barefoot in public locations – like the pool, locker room or communal showers – you increase your risk of picking up a viral or bacterial infection.

Soak up Excess Moisture

Due to the humidity and your sweat, moisture buildup in your shoes is common during the summer months. However, the excess moisture could lead to blisters or infections which may impact the health of your feet. In addition to changing your socks regularly, baby powder can help soak up any excess moisture.
